Aligator
Mi Gaung - မိေက်ာင္း
The aligator is similar to crocodiles have narrow snouts while aligators have slightly blunt or rounded snouts. Only the aligator is found in Myanmar. The aligator is the biggest of the reptiles. Its skin is very tough and rough. It is a carnivorous animal which feeds on fish, other animals and sometimes even human beings! Its skin can be used to make leather bags, shoe etc.
Barking Deer
Gi - ေခ်
The barking deer belongs to the deer family. It is reddish brown and small in size. It is herbivorous. Though easily frightened, the barking deer usually forages solitarily. Its breeding period is in June and July. Its horns are shed in March or April. A barking deer has two small unsteady canine teeth. It barks repeatedly like a dog when in defiance, but barks continously when in panic. There is one other smaller species of barking deer family called the "Little Leaf Deer" which is only found in the Putao area.
Bat
Linn Nort - လင္းႏုိ႔
41 species of bats are found in Myanmar. Except for their feeding habits and sizes, the common bat is similar to the fruit bat. The common bat does not eat fruits but eats only insects. During the daytime the common bat hides in nooks and crannies of buildings and trees. They have highly sensitive nerves in their wings and ears. The bats sense echoing sound waves which enables them to navigate.
Bear
Wet Won - ဝက္ဝံ
There are many species of bears of which two kinds are found in Myanmar. They are the Sun Bear and the Black Bear or the Himalayan Bear. The Sun Bear is shorter and smaller than the Black Bear. Both types have bodies covered with thick rough hair which make them look big and frightening. They can stand and walk for some time on their two hind feet. Bears have long claws, which are used to climb trees in order to gather fruits and leaves. They also eat vegetables, fish and insects such as ants and termites. But honey is their favourite food.
Cat
Kaung - ေၾကာင္
The common cat which is often kept as a pet is a carnivore. The body is covered with soft fine fur. Cats are found in a variety of different colours and patterns. It can walk very quietly because there are soft pads on the bottom of its feet. Its claws are hard and sharp. They are hidden away when not in use. Cats prey on birds and other small animals such as mice. Their eyes provide sharp vision at night.
Chameleon
Poat-Thin-Nyo - ပုတ္သင္ညိဳ
There are several species. The chameleon is related to the iguana, ground lizard etc. It has bulging eyes. It can change its skin colour due to the change of weather or when frightened. When the rainy season begins, male chameleons have blue-green heads. It catches insects and other small creatures with its sticky tongue. Another similar type locally called “Tet-tu”is found in central Myanmar.
